It’s no secret what UVU is doing for the local community, but few of us may realize the international connections the university is forming under the expert eye — and extraordinary efforts — of Baldomero Lago, UVU’s chief international officer. From his efforts as an Honorary Consul of Spain for the state of Utah to bringing the United Nations to Utah for the 68th World Civility Society Conference in 2019, this knighted son of Spain is working hard for his adopted home — Utah.
Dealer’s Choice I have three typical types of work days. First: swimming in a sea of emails. I create global partnerships for students, coordinate global academic projects and visits, which means I am constantly juggling schedules and following up with details. Second: meeting with faculty, administrators and community leaders. Third: traveling.
The Flop I was surprised to be appointed by the Congress of Spain as an official government representative. To act as Honorary Consul of Spain in Utah has opened many doors for me. This voluntary post helps Spanish citizens in Utah and I’ve issued more than 10,000 visas to LDS missionaries going to Spain. Due to my service, I was knighted by the King!
Shuffle the Cards As a young man, Spain was transitioning from a dictatorship to a democracy. Multiple strikes and a lack of coordination affected my education. I packed my one suitcase and started my education at Ricks College, in Rexburg, Idaho — a big leap of faith! I integrated into the culture, and faced the barriers of a second language, especially in a new educational environment.
Preferred Playing Partner My daughter Kristi. She is a game fanatic and brings a new game to every family event.
Ace Up Your Sleeve I am driven to think big, and to create events and connections most people would not dare to approach.
Wild Card I am a great cook and I play the piano.
Tomorrow’s Bets Explore Croatia’s historical sites, famous waterfalls and swim in the Adriatic Sea.
Hit the Jackpot If I win, I’d explore new lands and cultures.
Tomorrow’s Bets Retired, traveling, still serving the community, and spending time with our six (maybe more by then) grandkids.
