Kenneth Rooks

We all have highs and lows, but not everyone gets an Eiffel Tower moment. In the 2024 Paris Olympics, Kenneth Rooks earned a silver medal in the steeplechase track event, where he shocked spectators by steadily conserving energy then gaining speed to blitz to the finish line. But his steeplechase wins extend far beyond the Olympics — with titles including U.S. Champion in 2023 and 2024, and NCAA Champion for BYU in 2023. Kenneth is currently finishing up his final semester at BYU, studying civil engineering while running professionally for Nike. He is truly a champion, whether on the track, in class, or spending time with his wife of one year (happy anniversary!).

Dealer’s Choice I run an average of 12 miles a day. Some days I run eight to 10 miles, and others I run 12 to 14 miles, split up into two runs. I do a longer run of 15 to 16 miles on Saturday. Right now, a day in my life looks like going to classes and studying for school while blocking out time to train for running.

The Flop One of the best surprises of my life was winning the 2023 U.S. Championship in the steeplechase after falling.

Hand You Were Dealt I have had my fair share of injuries. I have had to learn patience and how to take care of my body better to stay healthy. I have also learned that sometimes setbacks are unavoidable, but focusing on gratitude helps me through the bad times.

Shuffle the Cards Choosing to attend BYU has been a huge part of my running success and my network of relationships that I have now. Another turning point for me was being a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Another important turning point for me was marrying the love of my life, Taylor, in February 2024. She has truly brought out the best in me.

Go-to Game Cribbage with my grandparents, who I learned the game from.

Wild Card Most people don’t know that I am still a student at BYU. Also, when I was born, my mom was working for Nike and now I am a professional runner for Nike — which is a cool connection.

Tomorrow’s Bets This year, I want to break the American record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
