Hawaii-native Michael Macasio is turning heads through unique hobbies and exotic pets — this one pictured is named Mochi. In 2018, Michael was approached by the previous owner of Orem’s long-standing pet store Animal Ark to purchase the store. As one of many dedicated employees since 2010, Michael considered it a great surprise and blessing to receive the offer, and has been happily owning and managing Animal Ark since. Outside of being a business owner, Mike has been the president of The Bonsai Club of Utah since 2022 and is a dedicated plant dad. With over 250 bonsai trees, 39 pets, several freshwater fishtanks and a family to care for at home, alongside a store full of pets and numerous other hobbies, it’s safe to say Mike leads an exciting lifestyle. Mahalo for sharing your talents with Utah Valley, Michael!
Dealer’s Choice A typical day always starts with a trip to Animal Ark, where I kick things off by taking care of the fish and handling other tasks that need attention. Some days I’m headed to the airport to pick up new fish or animals, or restocking the store with fresh supplies. I’m always collaborating with my team and customers, brainstorming new ideas to keep the store evolving. I genuinely enjoy interacting with our customers, helping them find the perfect pets and supplies for their homes.
Shuffle the Cards Relocating from Hawaii when I was 18 was one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever made. Being so close to my family, it was a tough choice, especially since I didn’t have any family in Utah. But looking back, it was a decision that opened the door to the right opportunities, and it’s brought me to where I am today.
Ace Up Your Sleeve I was the captain of the Green Man Group from 2011-2013, and I love drumming. I am also pretty decent at aquascape design and cultivating bonsai trees.
The 2025 Deck I’d love to travel to see my favorite drum battalion group, DCI. I’d also like to attend competitive bonsai shows.
Ace Eats Golden Thai Cuisine in Orem, with the house special fried rice.
Hit the Jackpot If I won the jackpot, I’d buy a nice bonsai tree and maybe take a trip to Japan.
